A recent poll suggests a stronger set of measures be put in place to ensure debtors of the Student Loan Fund pay off their debts.
The NIDA Poll of the National Institute of Development Administration made the revelation in its latest survey on the issue concerning student loan defaults. The poll sampled 1,269 people aged older than 16 from various regions of the kingdom, with different educational and professional backgrounds contributing their opinions on the issue.
According to the survey, about 54% of the respondents agreed that loan guarantors should be held responsible for the default whereas 43% said otherwise citing the fact that guarantors gain nothing from the student loan and should be only partially responsible for the debt. The latter group is of the opinion that the borrowers must be the only party responsible for the repayment.
When asked about punishment for loan defaulters, about 62% of the poll-takers said the payment should be automatically taken out of the salary of the debtors, another 31% said the organization employing the debtors should be responsible for the payment. At the other end of the spectrum, about 17% said the debtors should be prosecuted for loan delinquency, 14% favored penalizing debtors with a ban on financial transactions, and 9% of the sample said asset forfeiture is the appropriate punishment.
